CALHOUN COUNTY, IA – Court documents give more details on what happened the night of a man’s death and the violent history between the murder suspect -- who is also his brother.

Kyle Andrew Coolack, 39, has been charged with murder in connection to the death of his brother, Brad Henry Coolack, 35, who was found dead in March of 2022. Brad Coolack was shot multiple times at an apartment in the 7200 block of West Greens Road.

What happened

Kyle initially called 911 to report that a man had been shot multiple times in the leg and identified himself as “Coolack,” according to records.

He reportedly told the operator that CPR was not in progress because the patient was dead and then hung up the phone.

When officers arrived, they found Brad’s body on the apartment’s bedroom floor, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, records show. A dog was also found and appeared to have been grazed by two bullets.

A tourniquet was reportedly located on Brad’s left leg and three fired 9mm shell casings on the bedroom floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives spoke with the victim’s ex-girlfriend who then informed them about Brad’s brother, Kyle. She told detectives that Kyle would frequently stay at his brother’s apartment. She also said there was an incident in 2021, where Kyle reportedly pistol-whipped his brother.

Investigators also spoke with Brad and Kyle’s mother, who told detectives that Kyle owns a firearm and believes he is likely responsible for his brother’s death.

Houston police said witnesses in the area said they heard two people arguing and then multiple gunshots.

During the argument, the witness told investigators that they heard one of the men yell at the other man, “You slept with my wife!” and immediately several gunshots. When investigators spoke with Brad’s ex-wife, she admitted to the affair with Kyle while Brad was deployed overseas.

Kyle Coolack was initially identified as a person of interest in this incident and the murder charge was filed on July 15, 2022.

After two years on the run, Coolack was found in Calhoun County, Iowa.

Murder suspect caught after admitting to brother’s murder

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call Saturday from a man who said he had just kicked another man out of his home. The man had been staying at the home recently. Authorities were told in a conversation the man, identified as Coolack, admitted to being on the run for killing his own brother, which led to the resident kicking Coolack out of the house.

A Calhoun County deputy located Coolack outside of the town of Pomeroy walking south along a highway. He was detained and questioned.

After initially giving deputies a false name, Coolack revealed his real name to deputies. Checking records, deputies were able to find the outstanding murder warrant Coolack was wanted for.

Coolack was arrested and taken to the Carroll County Jail to await extradition back to Houston.
