Teen accused of murdering teen’s stepdad misses court appearance

Judge: “Court officer said defendant was disruptive.”

(This article has been updated to reflect that the victim’s family disputes the judge’s characterization that Martinez was the former boyfriend of Casas’ teenage stepdaughter.)

Cristian Martinez, a 17-year-old high school senior who cuts hair on the side and lives with his parents, missed a scheduled probable cause hearing in court Saturday.

The judge reported that the defendant was being disruptive, and the probable cause hearing continued without him Saturday night.

Martinez is accused of killing the stepfather of his former love interest. Although, the family said they were not in a dating relationship.

In court, Martinez was characterized as obsessive and harassing to the Casas family.

On August 10, Osvaldo Casas, 37, was shot and killed outside his home in Southeast Houston.

“The daughter stopped seeing the defendant after the defendant assaulted her and then repeatedly called her until she blocked the defendants phone number,” the judge read from a court document.

Casas’ wife was eight months pregnant at the time of the murder.

“It’s just not the same. He missed out on the birth, and he was so excited, and Orlando never got to meet his dad, and he never got to meet Orlando,” Judith Molina, Casas’ widow said.

Martinez was arrested on Thursday and is listed as a co-defendant in court documents. There appears to be no other arrests in the case at this point, but court documents read by the judge in court state that someone may have been with Martinez the night Casas was killed.

“Cristian is just one of the people responsible. I believe there’s about two more that still need to be held accountable,” Molina said.

Martinez is held in the Harris County Jail on $200,000 bond. The state had requested a $250,000 bond.
