Researchers looked into 800 universities in the U.S. and narrowed their findings by comparing data that ranged from student-faculty ratios to graduation rates to salaries after graduation.

Its findings led WalletHub to rank Rice University as the overall best college in Texas. The university actually outranked other colleges in neighboring cities like U.T. Austin, Trinity University, and A&M University.

The caveat, however, is Rice was the only college in Houston to make the top 10, which is a drag for University of Houston grads like myself, but hey a win for Houston is still a win!

Not only that but when examining the best colleges and universities for its 2025 report, WalletHub named Rice the 6th best between Dartmouth and California Institute of Technology.

Both rankings don’t come as a surprise to Rice University officials:

“Rice is steadfast in its dedication to providing an exceptional, affordable education while building on our reputation as a global leader in both teaching and research,” Rice University’s Amy Dittmar, Howard R. Hughes Provost and executive vice president for academic affairs claimed in a statement to KPRC 2. “At Rice, we offer a unique, personalized learning experience that equips students to tackle complex challenges, fostering an interdisciplinary environment that prepares them for success in their future endeavors. We are educating and empowering the leaders of tomorrow for the benefit of all. It is rewarding to see this recognized in many publications and rankings.”
