HOUSTON – A strike approval vote by United Airlines flight attendants Wednesday has many travelers asking if they’ll see a significant impact on flights.

With the strike approved by an overwhelming 99.99% of voting flight attendants, the possibility of disruptions across United’s network is real if management fails to meet their demands.

If the strike moves forward, passengers could face delays, cancellations, or disruptions at short notice. The Association of Flight Attendants’ trademarked CHAOS (Create Havoc Around Our System) strike strategy allows the union to initiate strikes in a way that could target specific flights or spread across the entire system, keeping management and passengers in the dark about when and where disruptions will occur.

Given the timing, any strike action would likely cause significant inconvenience to travelers. The uncertainty alone could lead to decreased confidence in flight schedules, potentially causing travelers to seek alternatives or postpone travel plans.

As negotiations continue, passengers flying United Airlines in the coming weeks should stay informed about the situation and prepare for possible changes to their travel plans. The situation remains fluid, and the extent of the impact on flights will depend on the outcome of ongoing talks between United Airlines management and the flight attendants’ union.

To avoid delays, here are some steps you can take:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor United Airlines’ official website and social media channels for real-time updates on the strike situation and any potential disruptions. Sign up for flight alerts through United’s website or a travel app, so you receive notifications of any changes to your flight status.
  • Travel Earlier or Later: If possible, consider adjusting your travel plans to avoid flying during the peak Labor Day weekend. Traveling a few days earlier or later may reduce the risk of encountering delays or cancellations.
  • Check for Alternative Flights: Look for alternative flights with other airlines, especially if you have a tight schedule. Booking a backup flight on another airline could help you avoid being stranded in case your United flight is disrupted.
  • Choose Nonstop Flights: Nonstop flights reduce the risk of delays and missed connections. If your original itinerary includes layovers, consider switching to a nonstop flight if available.
  • Arrive Early: Arrive at the airport earlier than usual, as potential disruptions could lead to longer lines and processing times. This gives you more flexibility to adjust if there are last-minute changes to your flight.
  • Pack Smart: Pack essentials in your carry-on, including medications, chargers, and a change of clothes, in case your checked luggage is delayed or you face unexpected layovers.
  • Book Flexible Travel: When booking flights or accommodations, choose options with flexible cancellation or change policies. This will give you the freedom to adjust your plans without incurring significant fees.
  • Consider Travel Insurance: Purchase travel insurance that covers flight delays and cancellations due to labor strikes. This can help cover unexpected expenses like hotel stays or rebooking fees.
  • Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and handy. If your flight is delayed or canceled, being able to quickly contact United Airlines customer service or rebook your flight online will be crucial.
  • Be Prepared for Ground Transportation: In case of a cancellation, have a plan for alternative ground transportation, such as car rentals or train services, especially if you’re traveling within a reasonable distance.
