Lydia Monique Aviles, 28, is charged with two counts of abandoning a child with intent to return.

According to court documents, Aviles left two children younger than 15-years-old inside a locked vehicle on a hot day without sufficient air conditioning on Friday.

Baytown Police say Aviles left the two children inside the car for approximately an hour while she was in a salon getting her nails done. While the car was on, authorities say the air conditioning was not strong enough to cool the entire vehicle.

“Upon arrival, officers observed the children, one in a car seat and the other moving around inside the vehicle. Although the air conditioning was on, it was not strong enough to cool down the entire vehicle,” the department said.

KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with an employee of the salon who asked to remain anonymous. She said the salon was busy when Aviles walked in.

“She was just a walk in and we just did the color very quick on her toes and did a refill. Suddenly, the police opened the door and called her name, and she immediately went outside,” said the employee.

Court records indicate Aviles has since been released from jail after posting a $20,000 bond.

Police say the children were released to a family member and there were no injuries.
