Suspect dead after shootout with officers at Galveston bar

GALVESTON, Texas – A man is dead after authorities said he was involved in a shootout with police at a Galveston bar Wednesday.

According to the Galveston Police Department, officers were investigating an incident where a man reportedly illegally entered a home on Galveston’s East End around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

After getting a good description of the suspect, officers were able to track him to Woody’s Bar in the 11000 block of Termini-San Luis Pass Road.

When officers arrived, they determined the suspect was armed and commanded him to lay down his weapon.

The suspect reportedly ignored the commands to put the gun down and shots were exchanged between the suspect and officers. The suspect was struck by the gunfire and died from his injuries.

Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli said the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on modified duty assignments pending an investigation into the incident.

The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate the shooting as well as the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Team.
