MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – Crash data from TxDOT supports residents fears that State Highway 242 in Montgomery County is a nightmare.

The lion’s share of the problem appears to be where the heavily congested road on the westbound side meets the I-45 feeder, just north of The Woodlands.

“Our families come in and out of this intersection every day, and last Friday alone, there were four accidents in one day,” Julie Davids, a nearby resident said.

Davids contacted KPRC 2 through “2 Helps You” and encouraged her neighbors to do the same. It got our attention.

The incidents of drivers running red lights and getting into wrecks is so common, Davids’ neighborhood Facebook page keeps a running tally of ‘days since the last accident.’

Traffic volume is heavy in the area, with uncontrolled access to retail centers in the area, there is a lot of entering and exiting of 242. Slower traffic is constantly merging with faster traffic.

To compound matters, the traffic lights are bent on the eastside of the intersection at I-45, making it hard for drivers coming over a blind hill to tell if the light is green, yellow or red, from a distance.

Montgomery County Commissioner, Matt Gray, Precinct 4, just learned about the problem, but appears to be taking action.

“We’ve been on the phone with TXDOT, been in communication with those guys. In the meantime, I’ve reached out to the Sheriff’s Department to get some additional law enforcement over there,” Commissioner Gray said.

In 2024, TXDOT recorded 426 accidents on SH-242 in Montgomery County.
