TERRELL, Texas – A police department in a city just east of Dallas is in mourning after losing two of its members in two days, an officer who was shot and killed while on duty, and another K9 officer who died from an illness.
The Terrell Police Department said Officer Jacob Candanoza pulled over a vehicle around 11 p.m. Sunday.

“Officer Candanoza requested a cover unit and units were dispatched. Within moments of this dispatch, the Terrell Police Department Communications Division received two 9-1-1 calls regarding an officer being shot. They then received a radio transmission from a citizen giving the same information,” the department said.
Other officers arrived and found Candanoza had been shot. He was taken to Baylor Scott and White in Forney where he succumbed to his injuries. Candanoza had been with the department since July. A suspect in his shooting was captured around 5:30 a.m. Monday.
On Saturday, the department posted on Facebook asking for prayers for K9 Officer Max. Max was being evaluated at Texas A&M Veterinary Center in College Station to determine the cause of recent health issues.
On Sunday, the department announced they had been told K9 Max was suffering from an illness that was not survivable.
“Considering the diagnosis and current condition, the very difficult decision was made to let Max go peacefully. At this time, we ask for continued thoughts and prayers for Max, his handler Officer Anders and the entire police department,” the department said.
