Big changes to Tropical Storm Imelda’s path and impact to the United States

Storm curves east away from the United States

Tropical depression number nine is now Tropical Storm Imelda as of Sunday afternoon.

The system continues to be influenced by the proximity and strength of Humberto. This is changing the track of the Imelda to move farther east.

After Imelda moves through the Bahamas, it moves northeast. The farther east Imelda tracks, the lower the impacts the Southeast coast will feel. South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia’s flood threat has decreased.

Lower flash flood risk

However, the east coast of Florida is still experiencing gusty winds and torrential downpours as the tropical moisture moves north.

Although the United States’ impacts are decreasing, the tug to the east puts Bermuda in Imelda’s path late week. Imelda will continue to strengthen early week, becoming a Category 1 hurricane if it can organize.
