If you’re seeking out cooler weather, we do expect a gradual cooling in September. Our average high drops to 88° by the end of the month. Our average low drops to 67° - thank goodness!

The Climate Prediction Center puts out monthly outlooks, and for September, we are expected to be around average. While usually I don’t love being average, in this case, it’s great! The high plains are expected to be warmer than average.

September Temperature Outlook

Here in Houston, we are not guaranteed to see any crisp fall weather this month. Last year, our monthly high mean temperature was 92.9°, which is several degrees above average. As a reminder, our latest 100° day was September 27th after Hurricane Rita. Sheesh!

Throughout the month, you will start to notice our sunsets getting much earlier. By the end of the month, sunset is at 7:07 p.m., which means we will have lost about 51 minutes of daylight.

The full moon this month falls on September 7th. This moon is called the “corn moon” because this time of year corresponds with the harvest for many Native American tribes.

The Autumnal Equinox is the astronomical start to fall! This year it falls on Monday, September 22nd at 1:19 p.m., which is when the sun is directly above the equator.

Another trait of September is hurricanes. The peak of hurricane season is just around the corner. The statistical peak is on September 10th. This does not mean we will have a tropical system on that day (and we’re not forecasting it), but it is the day we are most likely to have a named storm in the Atlantic Basin.
