As Houston ISD students head back to class on Tuesday, the weather looks like a fairly typical late-August day.

Tuesday will be hot, humid, and have a chance of afternoon storms. The forecast calls for a high of 94° with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. This is right in line with what we’ve seen over the past two decades.
A History of Hot Starts:
Looking back at the last 20 years, the average first-day high for HISD is a steamy 94.8°, with the average low a warm 75.8°. Half of those first days reached 95° or hotter, and one in four climbed to at least 99°. The hottest start to the school year came on August 23, 2010, when the thermometer hit 102°.
When Rain Steals the Show:
While the first day of school is usually dry, heavy rain has occasionally made a big splash.
In the last 20 years, the wettest was August 22, 2016, when 4.00 inches fell. And of course, the most infamous weather-related delay came in 2017, when Hurricane Harvey hit just days before school was set to start, dropping over 50 inches of rain in parts of the city and delaying HISD’s return for weeks.
Tuesday’s Takeaway:
While Tuesday’s 94° high won’t break any records, it’s still a reminder that late-August heat in Houston is no joke.
