Houston dodged the worst of a tropical disturbance tracking through the Gulf Coast this week. However, we’re still going to see rain starting Thursday night that will pour into Friday.
Friday’s Forecast
For Houston, the best chance to see rain will likely be Friday afternoon, especially between 4 and 5 p.m., as the edge of the tropical moisture moves closer.
Forecast models show some scattered showers or a quick downpour for eastern counties, but overall rainfall totals are expected to stay light — perhaps just a half an inch to an inch.
Tracking the tropics:
Our tropical disturbance has been struggling to gain any traction as it’s been scraping across the Gulf coastline.
The system’s odds of developing into a storm have dropped to 30 percent. Instead of strengthening, the disturbance is now moving over land, mainly impacting areas north of New Orleans.
Computer models are in good agreement about the storm’s movement. Most of the tropical moisture is forecast to slide north of New Orleans, leaving Houston with only some light showers and extra clouds as the system’s remnants drift by.
While Houston can expect limited impact, the story is different for Louisiana. The flash flood risk is especially high south of Baton Rouge, where a “three out of four” level of heavy rainfall has prompted flood watches through 7 p.m. Saturday. Rainfall forecasts suggest that parts of Louisiana could see 5 to 10 inches of rain during the event.
Anyone traveling along I-10 or heading into Louisiana should prepare for a stormy day and potential flooding. The real danger of flash flooding stays well east and south of the Houston area at this time.

Your 10-Day Forecast:
Any lingering moisture is expected to move out by Saturday morning. After that, rain chances drop off and temperatures are set to rise, with highs in the mid-90s starting early next week.
