National Hurricane Center watching for tropical development in Atlantic Basin

First region of possible development this 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Tracking The Tropics

The official start to hurricane season is June 1st. We are only two days in and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has already designated a region they are monitoring for possible tropical development over the next week.

Now to be clear - this is only a LOW chance for development. The NHC has said there is a 0% chance of formation in the next two days but there is a 10% chance of formation in the next week.

Over the next several days we are expecting a non-tropical low to form around the SE coastline. Right now, it looks like the system will remain off shore. This would keep most of the rainfall offshore, however, it would also allow the low pressure system to gradually develop in the warm waters as it moves to the northeast at 10-15mph. This means we could see some tropical characteristics later this week.

This is just the beginning of our tropical season. Make sure to stay weather aware and make a plan. A great resource is our KPRC 2 Hurricane and Flood Survival Guide which airs this Wednesday at 7PM.
