Record heat alert: Gulf region sizzles under intense heatwave

Meteorologist Justin Stapleton explains why temperatures keep climbing

HOUSTON – The Gulf region is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, and it seems there’s no relief in sight just yet. KPRC’s meteorologist, Justin Stapleton, brings us the latest updates as temperatures continue to climb, setting new records along the way.

Record-high temperatures hit the Gulf

Yesterday, we saw the temps soar to 95 degrees, beating previous records of 94 set back in 1907. Today, temperatures are expected to reach between 96 and 97 degrees, potentially breaking records set back in 2018.

If you’re in areas like Austin or San Antonio, expect even higher temperatures, ranging from 100 to 105 degrees, with a heat index that might feel like 110 degrees.

Understanding the heatwave

So, what’s behind this scorching summer? According to Justin Stapleton, two low-pressure areas are shifting the jet stream, impacting our weather patterns. As the jet stream dips on either coast, a domineering high-pressure dome sits over the Gulf region, causing the ongoing heat.

Safety tips during extreme heat

With the 10-day forecast showing little change, it’s crucial to stay safe in the heat. The meteorologist advises staying hydrated and checking on those who might not have adequate cooling. Overnight temperatures remain warm, adding to the discomfort. Make sure to be cautious and caring, especially for those who may have minimal air conditioning.
