Why is a storm in Louisiana making Mom worry about rain on her special day in Houston?

An unfortunately placed low-pressure system is too close for comfort to call for a sunny Mother’s Day

The KPRC 2 weather team would love to give mom a clear, sunny Mother’s Day weekend as a treat for all that she’s done for all of us over the years.

However, a developing low-pressure system just south of Louisiana Friday morning may play the role of spoiler, bringing a lot more clouds and even a small chance of rain showers through Mom’s special weekend.

Here’s what to know:

We’ll see a low-pressure system close off and start to spin across western Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. The problem is that it gets cut off from the rest of the jetstream. Meaning, the storm system will sit and meander for most of the weekend.

Since the storm will be close enough to SE Texas, we’ll experience something similar to when we’re on the fringe of a tropical system. What??

Yep, the dynamics are the same, clouds and showers/storms curl around the low-pressure centers counterclockwise.

So if the storm is centered in let’s say, central Louisiana, we’re close enough to have some showers and a LOT of thicker clouds curl around that storm and slide in from north to south, which would bring our sunshine chances down for Mother’s Day and maybe a quick passing shower or two.

The one bonus that we won’t have to deal with is a hot and sticky Mother’s Day! Depending on how close the low is to SE Texas, some areas will be seeing cloudy skies and low 60s, while others further to the west will see sunshine and upper 70s! Yay, weather!
