How did Houston get SO warm this week?

More importantly, how do we get out of this spring pattern and back to winter?

Kicking off the month of February, most Houstonians think of winter jackets and when the last freeze of the winter season will be to get a jump on the spring gardens. However, 2025 seems to, well, not have gotten the memo that it actually still IS winter.

FORECAST: Record-setting heat, patchy dense fog continues all week for Houston

Record-setting heat:

This week alone, we’ve seen three consecutive days of record-setting heat in the low 80s. That doesn’t sound too earth-shattering but considering that our average high is 66, that’s quite remarkable!

So what gives? Why are we feeling more like April with shorts and tank tops versus heavy sweaters and jackets? The answer lies in the location of the two major jet streams that help to carry, and more importantly, pull and push different air masses into or out of the state of Texas. Both of these streams this week have been pushed well north of Texas, leaving us to bake under a strong hot high-pressure cell in the southern Gulf.
