It’s said that there is a first for everything. That proved true for meteorologists along the Gulf Coast on Tuesday during the significant snowstorm when they issued the first-ever Blizzard Warning.

So what makes a Blizzard Warning? According to the Nation Weather Service (that’s who issues these types of things), it is when snow or blowing/snow is reducing visibility to a quarter of a mile or less for three hours or longer OR, sustained winds of 35 mph or greater or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater.

This morning, we were seeing winds cranking 50-60 mph near Beaumont. A common misnomer about blizzards is that they are called that because of the heavy snowfall.

That is actually incorrect, as blizzard warnings have been issued for just a few inches of snow (similar to what we were seeing around Beaumont into Lake Charles as the snow was picking up with some intensity).
