Storms to start this month and then the heat turns on! Get ready for a month of transition as summer is just licking its chops to give us a bite of heat! Look at how temperatures turn up beginning this weekend to next Friday, May 10th!

These are the highs into NEXT Friday, May 10th

That hot trend sets the stage for Mother’s Day weekend, so you may want to make the Sunday brunch reservation at an ice cream parlor. What gives? Computer models set us up with a strong High Pressure system in the upper levels to our south, which means we’ll have a strong southwest wind next week. That’s always a dry flow of air for us and dry air is easy to heat up!

Southwest winds are dry and hot winds for Texas!

The Climate Prediction Center doesn’t show much relief, either. The month ahead is expected to average above normal for Texas and the Eastern United States:

You can see that our normal highs usually start in the low 80s and head to 90° with the hottest ever recorded standing at 99° back in 1996! We could certainly beat that this month.

May Climate Data

So we need a few showers to cool us off and you might try the Eta Aquarid meteor shower this weekend, starting Sunday morning. With a new moon (meaning it’s dark), meteors will be easier to spot. But you need to be out early!

10-20 meteors per hour are possible

Speaking of the moon, April showers bring May flowers and that’s exactly what this month’s full moon is called: the Full Flower Moon.

Thursday, May 23rd

You can look for the Full Moon on May 23rd although I’m not sure you’re going to want to be outside much by then!

May-k plans now to stay cool this month!
