A new pilot program in Galveston called Project Fat Cat is installing free window A/C units for seniors, low-income families, and people with disabilities. The program, led by Build Galveston and funded by the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, honors the legacy of late community activist Leon Phillips. For residents like Timothy Edward, who lives with a disability and couldnโ€™t afford a new unit, the installation has been life-changing. So far, the initiative has helped 17 homes, with plans to reach up to 38. Applications are still open for Galveston residents.

Sarah-Anne Schumann with UnitedHealthcare says you should make sure kids hydrate in advance to keep them from feeling bad from dehydration later. The number one rule to keep hydration up, Schumann said, is to take four big gulps of water every 15 minutes. Summertime snacks can help too:OrangesWatermelonCeleryPopsiclesSmoothiesJuiceOn really hot days where you need the extra electrolytes, you can mix maybe half fruit juice with water, she said. Pretzels, popcorn and bananas can help replenish electrolytes without giving children sugary sports drinks. Hydration can help with your immune system and right now, we are all really concerned about infection and our risk for COVID-19 and staying hydrated can help decrease that risk, Schumann said.
