HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District announced Wednesday that sports will finally be returning to the district starting with high school football and volleyball. According to the district, football will kick off Thursday while volleyball will begin Friday, both with extra safety precautions in place. “To safeguard the health and safety or our students, staff and families, attendance will be limited to varsity games only,” the district said. The tickets may only be purchased at the students' schools.”Spectators who do attend games will be required to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. According to the district, “spectators will not be allowed at sub-varsity games that take place in school gyms or on school football fields.”For more information on district happenings, visit the HISD website.

KINGWOOD, Texas – Kingwood High School honored longtime volleyball head coach, Krista Malmstrom, with a ceremony and dedication Wednesday afternoon. During the ceremony, the school renamed its volleyball court after Malmstrom during the game between Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park High School, according to a release. The ceremony was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kingwood High School Gym. Malmstrom has been with Humble Independent School District since 1981 at Creekwood Middle School before she moved on to work at Kingwood High School three years later as the Lady Mustangs assistant volleyball coach. In 1996, Malmstrom was awarded Houston Area Coach of the Year and also a two-time coach at the UIL All-Star Volleyball Game.

With the TAPPS announcement of new start dates for its fall and winter sports on Friday, The Woodlands Christian Academy athletic director and his coaching staff's have a plan in place. "I think first and foremost it's good because it means we're having [a season]," Hollas said about the announcement. Hollas penned a letter to TAPPS officials recommending they start the season October 2, which is pretty much what TAPPS is going to do. Despite not getting a full 10-game regular season, Hollas said at least they are getting "an opportunity to play football". "They are still going to get an opportunity to be all-state and all-district and compete for a championship," Hollas said.

Those are the range of emotions volleyball coaches are feeling day-in and day-out as the number of days between now and the tentative start of the 2020 volleyball season gets smaller. The current start of 2020 volleyball tryouts still stand as August 3. But it is understood that the "normal" start to the season may not be the same for 2020. So, the biggest question is how do we safely start volleyball on time?
