Wardell Sr. joined the Navy as a young man, fighting in WWII and then again as a lieutenant in the Korean War. There are lots of cards.”Sure enough, at 4 p.m., Wardell Sr. exited the garage to see the crowds of neighbors cheering him on.

HOUSTON – It was a very special Veterans Day for the newest graduates of Harris County’s Veterans' Court program. Graduates were handed a coin, commemorating Veterans' Court, a certificate and an American Flag. Hughes presides over Veterans' Court and is a veteran herself. “Instead of it controlling my life, I now have control over my life,” Martin said. HOUSTON – Early Thursday morning, KPRC 2 introduced a 95-year-old WWII Veteran, Joe Rodriguez and his story. He served our country over 70 years ago and felt like no one remembered or care about his service. KPRC 2 Vincent Crivelli gave out Rodriguez’s phone number during an early morning broadcast in hopes that viewers could prove him wrong and responded in a big way. Rodriguez’s phone has been ringing off the hook non-stop. “to hear his voice live, it was very heartwarming.”Rodriguez said the calls were very special and emotional for him.

In addition to national parks, the families and veterans will also have free access to national wildlife refuges and other federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior on Veterans Day every year. “The Trump Administration is committed to honoring American patriots – the men and women who have served in our armed forces,” U.S. Secretary of the Interior David L. Nowadays, Rodriguez shares memories with his best friend and fellow veteran Hector Giron. The call of duty and the honor of service is something veterans share, regardless of age. “We are all pretty much family, they say not all family is blood and that’s how it is with veterans,” said Giron. However, he said Veteran’s Day is the exception.

HOUSTON – The City of Houston will honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces during a special virtual Veterans Day celebration. Mayor Sylvester Turner will host the 23rd Annual Houston Salutes American Heroes, which will include a moment of silence. Turner will be joined by Dr. Steven Hall, director of the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, and representatives from each military branch. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Veterans Day program will be virtual, with a limited number of guests invited to gather in person. The ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m.

HOUSTON – Sergeant Mike Nasche, a soldier in Houston on a recruiting assignment, is picking up the pieces after someone broke into his truck during the Marine Corps Ball this past weekend. “The back window was just completely smashed.”It happened in the parking lot of the Houston Marriott South near Hobby Airport Saturday evening. “All from veterans with disabled veterans license plates,” Nasche said. “There’s no on-duty security, there’s no rolling patrols in the parking lot,” Aguais said. You can talk to them.’”KPRC 2 reached out to Marriott for a statement but referred us to the Houston Police Department.

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will be honoring the men and women who have served in the military during a special Veterans Day event. The 23rd Annual Houston Salutes American Heroes will be held virtually, due to coronavirus concerns, on Wednesday beginning at 10:45 a.m. There will be a moment of silence at 11 a.m.KPRC 2′s former anchor and Vietnam veteran Bill Balleza will be emceeing the event. There will also be a singer, bagpiper and an induction ceremony for new recruits, among other things. The Lone Star Flight Museum is full of rich history connected to veterans. The leaders of the museum themselves are veterans and understand the importance of preserving that history and educating the public about it. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and likely the last milestone anniversary for most of those that served in uniform. And the former world wrestling champion is known just as much for her classic battles in the cage as she is a trailblazer for LGBTQ fighters in MMA.

HOUSTON – The Buffalo Soldiers Museum was founded as a non-profit organization 17 years ago. In 2008, they bought a building from the city of Houston and on Saturday, which is appropriately Veterans Day, they will finally realize their dream. Yes, it’s existed in this space for some time but now all floors of the building are fully renovated. All of this began as a retirement project for U.S. army veteran of the Vietnam War, Capt. I thank the Lord every day, every morning that I rise it give me the opportunity to put together an exhibit that demonstrates the heritage of the African American soldier,” said Matthews, founder of Buffalo Soldier Museum.
