Former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro at the 2019 Texas Tribune Festival in downtown Austin. Bob Daemmrich for The Texas TribuneJulin Castro on Tuesday formally backed Joe Biden for president, following the presumptive Democratic nominee's call for police reform in the wake of George Floyd's death. Castro, the former Biden primary opponent, U.S. housing secretary and San Antonio mayor, said in a tweet he was "proud to support" Biden, and a Castro spokesman confirmed he was endorsing the former vice president. While Castro had called for unity around Biden and vowed to help defeat President Donald Trump, he had not formalized his support for Biden until now. His brother, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, has not officially backed Biden, though a Joaquin Castro spokesman said in a statement last week that the congressman is "going to do everything he can to make sure Joe Biden beats Trump like a drum."

On May 1 an eternity ago in public health crisis time we announced that this years Texas Tribune Festival would be online. Youll find the mix of marquee names from politics, policy and the media youve come to expect from us. Another big change: Early-bird tickets for our 2020 festival are $99 our best introductory rate ever. Were going to sell a limited number of these, at which point well raise the price for Tribune members and raise it a bit more for nonmembers. Disclosure: The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and the University of Houston have been financial supporters of The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that is funded in part by donations from members, foundations and corporate sponsors.
