HOUSTON - It was a huge week for the top teams in Houston to lock horns and really see where they stood.

The U.S. Coast Guard detained four Mexican fishermen illegally fishing off the southern Texas coast Tuesday.

It was quite a discovery in tropical waters to bring in a Greenland shark, which can live for more than 500 years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

In January 2020, three new shark species that glow in the dark were discovered off the east coast of New Zealand. According to NBC News, a study published in the Frontiers in Marine Science journal on Feb. 26 identifies the glowing species as the kitefin shark, the blackbelly lanternshark, and the southern lanternshark. NBC News reports the discovery is the first time scientists have been able to find proof of bioluminescence in sharks. AdAccording to the study, the newly discovered species live in the ocean’s “twilight zone,” up to 3,200 feet below sea level, beyond which solar light does not penetrate and is too weak to initiate photosynthesis, NBC News reports. According to the report, researchers speculate the sharks glow as a way to illuminate the ocean floor while hunting for food and camouflage themselves in order to fend off potential predators and capture prey.

In one of the biggest matchups of the season in Texas high school football, the Katy Tigers did what they do best: put on a show. The Tigers' defensive unit complemented Koger's performance by holding Shadow Creek to zero offensive touchdowns in the first half. Despite a bumpy first half that consisted of penalties, personal fouls, and being scored on numerous times, Shadow Creek played a respectable second half, as they tied with Katy 14-14. As for Shadow Creek, they're in good hands. With all talent being accounted for, it is likely that Katy and Shadow Creek will meet in the Regional Finals in the seasons to come, just as Katy did with North Shore for four years in a row (2016-2019).

1 team moves up from Class 5A to 6A and into a pretty competitive district. So, what makes Shadow Creek and coach David President so special? Depth, depth, depth. The Sharks have a pair of proven big-league leaders – Ramon Walker and Shawn Jones Jr. Walker is a two-time first-teamer and has a versatile game. The Sharks have been to the postseason for three-straight seasons and made school history last year.

Across all of their programs, Shadow Creek has seen some spectacular success early on. Oklahoma-signee Bre'yon White leads the crew averaging 13 points and 8 rebounds per game. White was the District 24-5A Defensive MVP, while Taylor was the District 24-5A Co-MVP. Other key returners include first-team, all-district picks Brooklin Brown (7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game) and Da'Nae Williams (8.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game). Also watch for Riachel Anderson, who was a second-team, all-district pick, averaging 5.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

HOUSTON – This past Friday, the Shadow Creek High School football team beat Strake Jesuit. “We were just making sure, if you go out, make sure you wear a mask, and limit the time if you are outside," said senior Jairo Castillo. Senior quarterback and Baylor commit Kyron Drones made sure the guys were staying in shape during those two weeks. “We’re just making sure they know football is the bigger picture right now,” Drones said. “I know people want to hang out and do stuff, but we can’t have that right now until the season is over with.”

But VYPE has still done what we have always done when it comes to previewing Texas high school football here in Houston. Other names to remember on offense include WR Cedric Mitchell, RB Darius Hale and kicker Caleb Mendez. Offensive lineman Jonathan Clark is back after earning second-team, all-district honors. Defensively, cornerback Winfred Donahue is coming off a second-team, all-district season. Defensive tackle Larry Vojacek is coming off a sophomore season where he earned second-team, all-district honors.
