NEW YORK – NBC moved eight of this weekend’s 10 Premier League matches to its online streaming service Peacock behind a pay wall because it wanted to broadcast golf's U.S. Open and the Tour de France on its television networks. NBC took over Premier League U.S. broadcasts from Fox starting with the 2013-14 season and on typical weekends in recent seasons had two Saturday matches on NBCSN followed by a late game on NBC, and several Sunday matches on NBCSN. But there will be just two televised matches this weekend, Arsenal vs. West Ham on NBCSN at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday and Leicester vs. Burnley on NBCSN at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Premier League continues to play in empty grounds because of the novel coronavirus, and all September games are being televised live in Britain. It shifted them behind a pay wall to NBC Sports Gold for the 2017-18 season, and last year they cost $39.99 for a Premier League MatchDay Pass that gave access to 140 live matches or $64.99 for the Premier League Pass that included replays and additional programming.

Peacock, NBCUniversal's new streaming service, is ready to flaunt its colorful library of content and its attention-grabbing price point of $0. "Peacock Free" is the free, ad-supported option for any consumer regardless of cable provider. So "Peacock Premium" is a tad bit more expensive than Disney+ but it still costs less than WarnerMedia's new service, HBO Max, and Netflix. And it will have something that many streaming services don't: news and sports. As the last major streaming service to go to market, Peacock may have an issue grabbing consumers who have a limited amount of disposable income.

So now Peacock, which launches Wednesday, is hoping that blaring free in an ad campaign for the service will entice viewers wary of adding yet another video subscription to their stack, even in todays stay-at-home world. It has a free tier and a $5-a-month paid tier with more video. Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, HBO Max and short-video service Quibi have all launched over the past year. As a Comcast internet customer, she could get Peacock for free, so she did. HBO Max did not reply to a question about its subscriber count since launch.
