NEW YORK MTV says it is ditching plans for indoor performances for its upcoming Video Music Awards, opting for outdoor shows spread throughout New York City instead. Organizers had planned for some performances inside Brooklyns Barclays Center for the Aug. 30 show, but say they will follow the guidance of state and local officials to move them outside. New York City was one of the first U.S. cities hit hard by the virus, but cases have leveled off and some restrictions are being loosened. The ceremony bestows new awards focused on live performances and music videos created at home during the pandemic. BTS, Doja Cat and J Balvin are among the performances announced so far by MTV.

An MTV spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that the show will take place Aug. 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. New York Gov. Siesta Keystar Alex Kompothecras has been fired from the MTV show after alleged racist comments posted on social media resurfaced. In a statement given to ET on Tuesday, an MTV spokesperson confirmed that they had cut ties with Kompothecras. "Weve made the decision to cut ties with Alex and are editing the current season to minimize his presence. He will not be in future seasons of Siesta Key," the spokesperson said. Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni were also fired after racist tweets they posted came to light.
