This week’s spotlight game features the Katy Tigers and the Atascocita Eagles, two Houston-area heavyweights looking to pick up a statement non-district win.

It’s always hard to list the top high school teams in Houston without mentioning the Katy Tigers. Year after year they’re always in contention. A big reason why, head coach Gary Joseph who’s been in charge for over four decades.

Pearland Baseball is in the midst of an immaculate postseason--one in which they have yet to lose a game.

The Katy Tigers have made the Regional Semifinals in back-to-back seasons heading into 2023. Led by legendary coach Kalum Haack, who enters his 25th season at Katy and his 36th overall as a head coach, the Tigers could make another deep run in 2023.

Now, Kalum Haack will once again have to reload after the 2020 season, which didn't allow the Tigers to properly defend their crown. This year's team will be guided by senior Olivia McFadden, who is committed to play at Purdue. A pair of freshmen will make their debut for the Tigers in outfielder Ashtyn Reichardt and pitcher/first baseman Cameryn Harrison. Like I said, Haack always reloads, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes before Reichardt and Harrison are household names in Katy. ARLINGTON, Texas – The Katy Tigers brought home a state trophy, while the Crosby Cougars brought their community together with a special 12-4 season ending in the state finals. The Longhorns cut the lead to 37-14 before Katy shut the door with a 25-yard touchdown run by sophomore Seth Davis, and an interception return touchdown by Cal Varner. Crosby falls short but makes community proudThe Crosby Cougars hadn’t made the state finals since 1960, but an impressive run through the playoffs got them there in 2020. Crosby won two games in overtime to reach AT&T Stadium but fell short to powerhouse Aledo in the final. Coach Jerry Prieto was proud of their effort and how the team’s playoff run brought what he called a “divided” community together.

They're baaaaaaaaaaack! For the first time since their 2015 6A-DII State Championship, the Katy Tigers have returned to Arlington to play for a State Championship. The Tigers will face off against Cedar Hill tomorrow evening to play for their ninth Texas High School Football State Championship. This week, VYPE spoke with longtime Katy Head Coach Gary Joseph about the upcoming game, their incredible season, and what it's going to take to win their ninth trophy. In one of the biggest matchups of the season in Texas high school football, the Katy Tigers did what they do best: put on a show. The Tigers' defensive unit complemented Koger's performance by holding Shadow Creek to zero offensive touchdowns in the first half. Despite a bumpy first half that consisted of penalties, personal fouls, and being scored on numerous times, Shadow Creek played a respectable second half, as they tied with Katy 14-14. As for Shadow Creek, they're in good hands. With all talent being accounted for, it is likely that Katy and Shadow Creek will meet in the Regional Finals in the seasons to come, just as Katy did with North Shore for four years in a row (2016-2019).

HOUSTON - A day after the Pac-12 Conference pushed its 2020 football season to the spring, now so has one of the country's top recruits. Campbell, a four-star running back prospect in the Class of 2021, announced via his Twitter account Wednesday night that he has decided to forego his senior season and instead prepare to early enroll at USC. Campbell played his junior season for Pearland. Prior to his junior year, Campbell spent his freshman season at Mayde Creek and sophomore year at Katy Taylor. So, if the Pac-12 does indeed play a season in the spring, Campbell could see the gridiron then.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Some might say the Katy Tigers were not truly tested this year, but were challenged in the state championship against Cedar Hill in Arlington Saturday. The Tigers are no stranger to the stage, but it was their first time back in three years. But that's when Adam Taylor would take over while running over anybody in his way. In the 2nd quarter, the Tigers were down 3-zip when Adam Taylor soared in from a yard out. He led Katy to win their 7th title in school history, 35-24.
