The Houston Police Officers’ Union voted to approve a new five-year contract, several provisions continue longstanding policies that shape the department’s operations and oversight.

A historic new contract has been approved to help recruit new officers, as well as raise officers' salaries. Right now, starting officers are making $64K a year, but this new contract will bump that to $81K a year. On top of that, the new contract adds 500 more officers to the department.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and City Council members approved a contract with the Houston Police Officers’ Union to increase police officers pay on Wednesday.

Community organizations and families are seeking for the department to release body cams from officer-involved shootings. The Houston Police Officers Union, which represents the officers wearing the body cams, also pushed the department to release the videos.
