HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner attended a news conference addressing the impact COVID-19 has had on the tradeshow industry. Turner was joined by industry leaders, including president and CEO of Houston First Corporation Michael Heckman to address the current state of the industry and the workers. The tradeshow industry provides thousands of jobs and helps put billions of dollars into the local economy, but since the start of the pandemic, this industry has been hit hard, Turner said. During the conference, Turner issued a callout to congress that the tradeshow industry must have federal assistance. “We look forward to the return of the tradeshow business,” Heckman said.

HOUSTON Some Texas Republicans have filed a lawsuit against Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner over his order to cancel the partys convention that was scheduled to happen in the city next week. According to court documents obtained by KPRC 2 on Thursday, the lawsuit was filed by five people, including Republican Party of Texas Secretary Josh Flynn and former Republican Party of Texas Chairperson Cathie Adams. In addition to Turner, the city of Houston and the Houston First Corporation, which oversees the George R. Brown Convention Center, is also named as defendants. The lawsuit claims Turner overstepped his authority when he ordered HFC to cancel the event that was expected to bring about 6,000 people to the downtown venue. The lawsuit also claims Turners order violates free speech, freedom to peaceably assemble and equal protection clauses of the constitution.

"Mayor Turner may not treat the [Republican Party of Texas] convention differently from that of the recent public protests that the Mayor supported," the petition reads. The party's biennial convention was expected to draw roughly 6,000 people to a city that is a hotspot for the coronavirus. A spokesperson for Turner told the Houston Chronicle that the mayor would address the lawsuit at a previously-scheduled 3 p.m. news conference.

Jason Millsaps, the Chief of Staff for Montgomery County Judge Mark J. Keough, says the Texas GOP is aware of the county judge’s offer and has been in contact with hotels and venues in Montgomery County.

During a virtual City Council meeting Wednesday, Turner said he has asked the city's legal department to work with the Houston First Corporation, which operates the George R. Brown Convention Center, to review the contract with the state party. "Where there are provisions that would allow us to cancel this convention we will exercise those provisions," Turner said. "And the plan is to exercise those provisions to cancel this agreement, this contract, today to not go forward with this convention."
