A Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to the humane treatment of animals is joining forces with one of the city’s most trusted sources for domestic violence prevention and assistance.

The Houston Area Women’s Center is opening One Safe Place Houston, a 5.5-acre facility designed to provide survivors of domestic violence with housing, crisis care, and resources for rebuilding their lives.

Each month in 2022, we’re partnering with Energy Transfer to showcase a different nonprofit organization offering Houstonians a helping hand. This month’s KPRC 2 community spotlight is on the Houston Area Women’s Center.

This month, we are featuring the Houston Area’s Women’s Center, an organization that that describes itself as a place that serves thousands of women, children and families each year escaping domestic violence, sexual assault or sex trafficking.

Officials at the Houston Area Women’s Center say last year, there were 81 domestic violence-related homicides in Houston. That doesn’t even include the rest of Harris County where last month a man was accused of brutally killing his wife in Cypress.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and local law enforcements and community leaders teamed up with advocates to shed light on the growing issues in the Houston area.

HOUSTON – The city of Houston has launched a new domestic violence awareness campaign Wednesday. While trying to fallen the curve of COVID-19 cases in the community, local law enforcement and the Houston Area Women’s Center have seen an uptick in domestic violence cases. The Houston Police Department reported an increase of 8.72% in domestic violence calls in March compared to February 2020. “We have seen a 40% spike in our domestic violence calls and of those calls, more people are asking for shelter. On Tuesday, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced a partnership with the Houston Area Women’s Center and the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council to provide more awareness and resources to those in need.
