SUGAR LAND, Texas โ€“ February marks three years since the first human remains were discovered at the construction site of a new Fort Bend Independent School District school. Over the course of several months, 95 unmarked graves were found and the people buried there would become known as the Sugar Land 95. The laws changed and now weโ€™re able to maintain it.โ€AdOverall, Dupre praised the handling of the discovery. He said the district is erasing history by not using names of any of the men involved in establishing convict leasing in Sugar Land. โ€˜Nothing ... done in good faithโ€™Three years later, some have said that the district is still ignoring the wishes of community stakeholders.

Read full article: Fort Bend ISD calls this weekโ€™s guidance from TEA for 2020-2021 school year โ€˜disappointing'

As Fort Bend ISD continues to plan for the upcoming school year, the Texas Education Agencyโ€™s recent announcement has created concern for the district. โ€œTodayโ€™s (Tuesdayโ€™s) announcement from the TEA is disappointing because the guidance, as written, does not provide local school districts with the flexibility to make decisions based on local data or community and staff values and expectations,โ€ a spokesperson for Fort Bend ISD said. โ€œFort Bend ISD is considering many safeguards and precautions to mitigate the spread of illness within our schools,โ€ Superintendent Charles Dupre said. โ€œOur teachers and campus staff are at the heart of everything we do, and we will not ask them to bear the risk and weight of any re-opening plan,โ€ Dupre said. Additionally, pre-registration will reveal the number of students desiring either face-to-face or virtual instruction and better allow the district to decide how classrooms will be used at each school.
