JUNEAU, Alaska – A magnitude 7.5 earthquake prompted a tsunami warning Monday for a nearly thousand-mile stretch of Alaska’s southern coast, with waves over 2 feet at the nearest community as the threat subsided. “It was a pretty good shaker here,” said David Adams, co-manager of Marine View Bed and Breakfast in Sand Point. It was centered about 67 miles (118 kilometers) southeast of Sand Point, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. Patrick Mayer, superintendent of the Aleutians East Borough School District, said parents picked up their children from Sand Point School, which also served an evacuation point. Waves by late afternoon in King Cove were less than 2 feet (0.61 meters), according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.

(AP) – The owner and director of an elementary school that collapsed in Mexico City during the 2017 earthquake has been found guilty of charges equivalent to manslaughter. The school collapse killed 26 people in the devastating magnitude 7.1 earthquake in September 2017. The Mexico City prosecutor's office said late Thursday it has requested a sentence of 57 years in prison for Mónica García Villegas. The collapse of the Enrique Rebsamen school killed 19 children and seven adults and came to symbolize the corruption and impunity that plague Mexican construction. Officials have said García Villegas' decision to build an apartment atop the school contributed to the collapse.

MEXICO CITY – A powerful earthquake centered near the southern Mexico resort of Huatulco killed at least two people, swayed buildings in Mexico City and sent thousands fleeing into the streets. Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said one person was killed and another injured in a building collapse in Huatulco, Oaxaca. Helicopters flew over downtown Mexico City and police patrols sounded their sirens. TONOPAH, Nev. – The cracked main highway between Las Vegas and Reno reopened Friday, 10 hours after a predawn magnitude 6.5 earthquake that a researcher called the largest to strike the remote area of western Nevada in 65 years. Nevada Highway Patrol photos showed cracks on U.S. 95 before crews repaired them about 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of Tonopah. The vast open range east of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada is seismically active, said Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno. The U.S. Geological Survey reported Friday's temblor struck just east of the Sierra Nevada. “”However, we have learned that other than obvious earthquake damage some damage is discovered later."

The question: What would Houston look like if we had an earthquake? A major earthquake, however, would be a catastrophe. Because of the silty, sandy soil in Houston, a major earthquake would cause the ground to take on liquid properties -- a process called liquefaction. Houston soil is swampy and silty, so you can imagine what would happen if we experienced a major earthquake here. So, if Houston were to experience a major earthquake -- which, again, it will NOT -- damage similar to that illustrated above would be possible.

(CNN) – A strong earthquake shook the Ogasawara Islands south of mainland Japan Saturday. The United States Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.6 in magnitude. The quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 885 kilometers (550 miles) south of Shizouka, Japan, to the west of the Ogasawara Islands, which are also known as the Bonin Islands. The earthquake's epicenter was 454 kilometers (282 miles) deep. There are no reports of damage or injuries.

EL PASO, Texas – An earthquake on Thursday rattled parts of west Texas. According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.7 quake struck near Mentone, which is about 77 miles west of Odessa and about 200 miles east of El Paso. The temblor hit about 10:15 a.m. Houston time. According to KTSM-TV in El Paso, some people in the border town felt the shaking. This quake was preceded by a smaller 3.8-magnitude tremor that was reported about 3:50 a.m. Houston time in the same area.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook Utah's Salt Lake City area Wednesday morning, cutting power to tens of thousands and suspending work at the state's public health lab amid the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. Flights to Salt Lake International Airport were being diverted, departures were postponed, and terminals and concourses were evacuated as workers inspected runways, the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration said. The quake was centered about 10 miles west of Salt Lake City and near the city of Magna, starting at 7:09 a.m. MT, the US Geological Survey said. Operations at the state's public health laboratory were halted as the building is assessed for damage, the state Department of Health said. "I know the last thing we need right now is an earthquake, but here we are, and it sounds like aftershocks are likely," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said on Twitter.

WASHINGTON – The Democratic-controlled House on Friday passed a $20 billion-plus aid package for Puerto Rico, where a swarm of earthquakes last month set back the island territory's slow, troubled recovery from the hurricane devastation of 2017. But the White House has promised to veto the legislation, charging the island's government of mismanagement and weak financial controls. Puerto Rico's non-voting congressional delegate, Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, a Republican, urged Democrats to look for common ground in hopes of getting agreement on an aid package the White House might accept. A White House veto threat took note of huge balances of unspent aid. But he has feuded with Democratic elected officials in Puerto Rico and has supported aid to the island after the urging of GOP office holders such as Florida GOP Sens.

HAVANA – A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and eastern Cuba on Tuesday. About three hours later, a massive 6.3 magnitude aftershock struck. A tsunami threat message was issued by the US National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center after the initial earthquake. Aftershocks are still rumbling across the Mid-Cayman Spreading Center (green dashed area) from that strong #earthquake a few hours ago. The quake also hit the Cayman Islands, leaving cracked roads and what appeared to be sewage spilling from cracked mains.

(AP) – A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit southern Puerto Rico on Saturday at a shallow depth, raising concerns about unstable infrastructure in a region that has been hit by quakes every day for nearly a month. The newest quake comes a day after hundreds of people in the island's southern region were evacuated from earthquake shelters that flooded after heavy rains hit the U.S. territory. The ground in southern Puerto Rico first began shaking on Dec. 28, and while experts say several local faults are to blame, they are still analyzing data to determine why the earthquakes continue. U.S. President Donald Trump has approved a major disaster declaration for more than dozen municipalities in Puerto Rico following earthquakes that officials say have caused more than $200 million in damage. More than 4,000 people remain in shelters, and officials expected that number to rise as a result of Saturday’s quake.

“Deep down, I know there was an element of trying to get a pat on the back,” Albert said. “That’s when they completely blew me away with their response.”What the community leaders essentially told Albert and Zelaya was this: Thanks for your efforts and compassion, but you actually did more harm than good. The experience was such an eye-opener that it led Albert and Zelaya to a greater purpose and mission. “That goes back to the negative aid that is undermining the natural development of the Haitian people,” Albert said. A 5.8-magnitude quake hit Puerto Rico before dawn Monday, unleashing small landslides, causing power outages and severely cracking some homes.
