A man who was already wanted for a murder in 2024 has now been hit with three new charges after his dogs killed his neighbor during an attack on March 23 in northeast Houston, according to records.

There appears to be a concerning rise in reported dog attacks across the Greater Houston area and nearby counties since 2024, with a significantly concentration of cases coming from Liberty County—many involving stray dogs.

Baytown police confirmed with KPRC 2 the dogs belonged to the baby’s parents. Since then, those dogs have been seized by animal control.

It’s an issue that has been going on for months in Liberty County.

Katrina Byrd is one of dozens of residents who alerted authorities on the stray dog attacks and was told she had the right to defend herself by shooting the dogs. When she did, she was put in handcuffs.

The USPS says dog attacks increased last year to more than 5,800 cases. In 2023, more than 56 postal workers in Houston were attacked by dogs while on the job.

KPRC 2 is embarking on a data project to map out where attacks or deadly maulings happen in the Houston area.
