Residents of a northwest Houston neighborhood are tired of living next to a vacant home that has become a neighborhood eyesore and nuisance.

A Houston resident has been struggling since 2017 to get the city's Department of Neighborhoods to address a dilapidated, abandoned house next to her property, facing repeated delays and lack of action despite multiple hearings and citations.

The City of Houston has unveiled plans to demolish 12 abandoned homes connected to a controversial landlord who was at the center of KPRC 2 reports earlier this year.

Vacant and abandoned properties are a problem in several neighborhoods across the Houston-area. Currently, the City of Houston’s Department of Neighborhoods has a list of 1,061 residential properties listed as “dangerous buildings.”

Monique Jones started her Friday blissfully listening to the sounds of weed whackers and a lawnmower as crews clean up her neighbor’s abandoned home.

A spokesperson for the Department of Neighborhoods tells KPRC 2 the property owner of the Arlington Place Apartments in southeast Houston is abandoning the complex.
