Greg Abbott has extended his original vehicle waiver to allow drivers with vehicle registrations that are expired up to nine months the ability to renew online, or at a grocery store or AAA partner. Fox 7 added that the online renewal system generates a receipt to carry in the vehicle until the new registration sticker arrives. Abbott issued a waiver from the requirement to renew registration upon the disaster declaration on March 16. According to the Texas DMV, drivers may choose to take no action during the waiver period; however, online registration renewal is still available. Houston Police Department is not enforcing citations for expired vehicle registration.

This waiver period remains in effect until the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces that normal operations have resumed. According to the Texas DMV, drivers may choose to take no action during the waiver period; however, online registration renewal is still available. Bear in mind, once normal operations have resumed, drivers will have 60 days from the date of the announcement to have their vehicle inspected and complete the registration process. HOUSTON – All Texas Department of Motor Vehicles offices were closed to the public after business hours Wednesday as an effort to help mitigate the spread of coronavirus. Officials say “support will continue to be provided by mail, email, and phone while in-person services are unavailable.”On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott granted a temporary extension for people trying to get initial registration, renewal of registration, vehicle titling, and renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard. “Governor Abbott also granted a temporary extension for an individual with an expired 30-day temporary permit to obtain another permit or Texas registration,” officials wrote. “This temporary waiver is in effect until 60 days after TxDMV notifies the public that normal vehicle registration, vehicle titling and related services have resumed,” officials wrote.
