AdNamed for the patron saint of gardeners, the St. Phocas Garden helps supplement a local food pantry operated by Catholic Charities of San Antonio. At St. Phocas, the sowing extends to the hollows of the multicolored painted concrete blocks that line 12 garden beds. “I need to feed people.”In lieu of fresh produce, the staples of St. Phocas in the last week have been continuity and renewal. In recent days, volunteers armed with wheelbarrows, shovels and hope returned to St. Phocas.

This latest round of rental assistance totals $159 million. “This program will bring much-needed relief for those tenants who are due to pay rent,” said Cristina Cave, community relations manager for BakerRipley. “We will be addressing first those tenants that need it the most,” Cave said. Stelly said her pension is barely enough to live on but is too much for her to receive public assistance.

HOUSTON The Houston Astros Foundation will host an emergency supply drive Saturday to help distribute donated items to Hurricane Laura victims. The supply drive will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The donated items will go to the Catholic Charities of Lake Charles and will be distributed to those impacted by the hurricane. The no-touch drive will also accept donations via curbside drop off on Crawford Street at the Left Field Entrance adjacent to Minute Maid Park. According to a news release, the Astros mascot Orbit and the Astros Shooting Stars will be on hand for the event.

RICHMOND, Texas – The Houston Food Bank and Catholic Charities are collaborating to bring a superfood distribution site to Richmond capable of feeding 1,500 families. The partnership kicked off Tuesday morning at Catholic Charities’ Mamie George Community Center (MGCC), which will host large-scale food distribution to hundreds of area low-income residents who are struggling, even more, to keep food on the table during the COVID-19 pandemic. MGCC is located in the zip code with the greatest need according to Catholic Charities. Food distribution runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families must register in advance through the Houston Food Bank’s system by texting 94502 with the letters HFBNSS as the message.
