Meanwhile, labor advocates hope what's happening in Bessemer could inspire workers beyond Amazon to form a union. Besides higher pay, they want Amazon to give warehouse workers more break time and to be treated with respect. At the start of the pandemic, for example, Amazon workers held walkouts because they said they weren't given protective gear or told when coworkers tested positive for the virus. The last time Amazon workers tried to unionize was in 2014 at a warehouse in Delaware. AdA union win in Bessemer does not mean a union win at the more than 230 other Amazon warehouses spread across the country.

(AP Photo/Jay Reeves, File)NEW YORK – Organizers trying to form the first union at an Amazon warehouse are getting support from another big name: Black Lives Matter. The group plans to hold an event Saturday near the warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, making it the latest high-profile supporter of the union push, which is the biggest in Amazon's nearly 30-year history. Most of the workers in the warehouse are Black, according to union organizers, and the backing from Black Lives Matter could help further legitimize the cause. “Black workers have historically been the backbone of this country, its institutions, and innovations,” said Patrisse Cullors, the executive director of Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, in a statement. More than 1,000 Amazon workers around the country have reached out to the union, according to Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which is organizing the push at Bessemer.

Over decades, many white workers have drifted toward Republicans, attracted in part by cultural identity and an anti-establishment posture. Even without that law, labor leaders say the Amazon result could be a springboard for labor organizing nationwide. Merritt, an expert on Southern labor politics, drew a straight line from the pre-Civil War economy to the current climate. Before slavery’s abolition, she said, white workers were threatened -- explicitly or implicitly -- with being replaced by slaves, stripping them of any leverage with employers. Eventually, northern industrialists entered Southern markets, joining white Southern land barons to take advantage of cheap labor in industries including textiles, steel and mining.
