HOUSTON – The Texans traded veteran offensive tackle Cam Robinson to the Cleveland Browns in a late-round pick swap, per a league source.

The Browns send the Texans a sixth-round pick in 2027 in exchange for Robinson and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick.

Robinson was a healthy scratch against the Tennessee Titans. Rookie left tackle Aireontae Ersery is entrenched as the starter.

The Texans later confirmed the trade with coach DeMeco Ryans emphasizing the move was primarily about giving Robinson an opportunity to play instead of sitting on the bench behind a younger player.

“We traded Cam to the Browns today, it gives Cam an opportunity to go play,” Ryans said. “Cam wants to play, so it gives him an opportunity to do that and we wish Cam nothing but the best.

“He has handled himself the right way since he’s been here. He’s done everything the right way, everything we’ve asked him to do. We wanted to do right by him and give him the opportunity.”

During the offseason, Robinson was signed to a one-year contract with a maximum value of $14.5 million.

The deal has a base value of $12 million.

By adding Robinson, the Texans thought they had replaced five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

Instead, he injured his leg during the preseason at The Greenbrier and was replaced by Ersery.

The Texans previously shopped Robinson to the Los Angeles Chargers, per a source. They ultimately traded for Texans reserve tackle Austin Deculus.

Robinson, 29, is a former Jacksonville Jaguars second-round draft pick from Alabama.

Robinson stepped in for Christian Darrisaw last season in Minnesota when he got hurt.

He allowed four sacks and 49 pressures for the Vikings, including a dozen pressures in a wild-card playoff game loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

He had 13 penalties, seven sacks allowed and 52 pressures overall for the season. He was ranked 53rd overall among offensive tackles, according to Pro Football Focus analytics.

Ersery has started all four games, including the past three games at left tackle and has made strides along with some rough moments in pass protection at times.

“I think he’s done a really good job, still has a ways to go,” Ryans said. “Still room to grow, room to get better. Those are separate from each other. That has nothing to do with Cam. Tae has done a really nice job.”
