Sources: Texans signing tight end Brenden Bates to 53-man roster, corner Ajani Carter to practice squad

HOUSTON – The Texans are signing former Cleveland Browns tight end Brenden Bates to the active roster, per a league source.

Bates has also played for the Chicago Bears. He played collegiately at Kentucky

Bates (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) has played for the New York Jets, too.

He caught 26 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns in college.

They are signing former University of Houston and Kansas City Chiefs corner Ajani Carter to the practice squad, per a league source.

Carter recently worked out for the Texans after previously auditioning for them at their annual local prospect day.

He went undrafted and signed with Kansas City.

A Utah State transfer, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound former all-district wide receivertied for third on the Coogs last year with three pass breakups and allowed one or no catches in six games. He played 453 snaps, 360 on defense and 92 on special teams.

At Utah State, he intercepted four passes overall.

He had 33 catches for 495 yards and seven touchdowns i n high school on a state championship squad, beating Duncanville as part of a 16-0 season. He also played baseball and ran track.

The Texans are also signing veteran safety Jalen Mills back to their practice squad, per a league source.

The Texans worked out running back Khalil Herbert and defensive backs M.J. Devonshire, Tysheem Johnson and Julius Wood on Tuesday, per sources.
