HOUSTON – The Texans invited towering Texas Tech tight end Mason Tharp to their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, according to his agent.
Tharp is a 6-foot-9, 270-pound Klein graduate who visited the Chicago Bears before the draft and played in the Tropical Bowl all-star game.

Tharp is a huge red-zone target who had three other minicamp invitations.
Primarily utilized as a blocker in a run-first Texas Tech offense, Tharp caught 13 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns last season. He finished his career with 57 catches for 614 yards and nine touchdowns. He had a 71.8 Pro Football Focus run blocking grade.
As a true freshman, the Spring native caught 14 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown.
An all-district selection who also played basketball, Tharp chose the Red Raiders over Arizona State, Colorado, Duke, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Michigan State, Ole Miss, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Utah, Virginia, Northwestern, Penn and Pitt.
