UTMB Health Athlete of Week: Galveston O’Connell Boys basketball

Buccaneers end long drought to win TAPPS title

GALVESTON – The UTMB Health Athlete of the Week normally goes to an individual athlete that stands out for their achievements on the playing field. This week though the spotlight shines on the entire Galveston O’Connell boys basketball team!

“It’s been an unbelievable feeling for us and our school,” Head Coach Derek Martin told KPRC 2’s Randy McIlvoy inside the O’Connell gym.

The Buccaneers certainly deserve the honor after earning the biggest prize out there! O’Connell won the TAPPS Class 2A State Championship!

To finish off their season, the Buccaneers beat Decatur Victory Christian Academy to win the state championship!

The state title was O’Connell’s first since claiming the crown back in 1986 while competing in the TCIL division. Their Head Coach at the time was Robert Lewis Jr. who is the grandfather of current O’Connell player Robert Lewis III.

O’Connell wrapped up the season by going 33-5 marking one of the best performances in program history.

Congrats to Galveston O’Connell for being our UTMB Health Athlete(s) of the Week!
