‘All we can do is be there for them’ Texans’ Tim Settle Jr. surprises kids at M.D. Anderson with presents, spreads cheer

HOUSTON – It was an emotional day for Texans defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. and the children he surprised with a visit Monday.

Settle gave out presents to patients at M.D. Anderson Children Cancer Hospital, spreading cheer at the holiday.

“It was good,” Settle told KPRC 2. “I got a lot of different energy from the kids. I got the most energy from the younger kids. It’s my first time being involved with cancer patients or anything like this. I feel like I was able to make some of them smile somehow. I enjoyed it.

“The fact that you got a smile dawned on me that’s what I’m here for, trying to turn something negative into something positive. Obviously, they’re going through what they’re going through. I feel like they don’t get to live life like us. It’s hard. All we can do is be there for them.”

Watching how teammate Dylan Horton overcame Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma to return to play again gave Settle a perspective on cancer.

“The fact that he dealt with this and all the treatments, hat’s off to them,” Settle said. “The fact that he overcame it and is playing at a high level now,, that’s meant a lot. I’m a big supporter of anybody that’s dealing with this.”

Settle gave out ear pods to the patients.

“I feel like it’s something they can enjoy, their choice of music or watching YouTube or whatever they’ve got going on,” Settle said. “The smiles. I feel like with the gift we gave today, we were able to at least have them smile. And they did smile.”
