HOUSTON – A man was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a wrong-way crash that killed a 5-year-old girl Friday night in northeast Harris County.
Investigators said Carlos Garcia Pineda, 20, was driving on East Mount Houston Road near Sheridan Road when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Cadillac head-on.
Jailey Sam Smith, 5, who was unrestrained in the backseat of the Cadillac, died from her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Her 28-year-old mother and Pineda were seriously injured.
“During the investigation, we have found some evidence that suggests that alcohol may be involved with the driver of the white Nissan,” said Captain Albers with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “There’s open beverage containers and signs of intoxication on his person.”
Pineda will be charged with intoxication manslaughter.
