New mural at James Driver Park honors fallen Harris County deputy

Community leaders and residents will gather tonight at James Driver Park for the unveiling of a mural dedicated to Deputy Darren Almendarez.

Houston artist DUAL’s mural will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. during a community celebration at James Driver Park, 10918 ½ Bentley St. in northeast Houston, led by Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The mural is part of Commissioner Garcia’s Love Letters to Precinct 2 public art initiative under the Revive2Thrive program, which transforms public spaces into expressions of local pride and culture.

Almendarez, who was killed in 2022 while trying to stop suspected car burglars, was previously honored when the park’s community center was renamed in his memory in 2023.
