CenterPoint Energy crews were already on the scene working to repair the leak inside the school when firefighters arrived. All students and staff had already been safely evacuated before emergency crews arrived.
All students and faculty remained outside for more than an hour in the heat while the building was being checked.
Between four and six students were taken to the hospital for heat-related issues, HFD communications director Brent Taylor told KPRC 2. Several others were evaluated or treated at the scene.
No injuries were reported in connection with the gas leak itself.
Houston ISD officials have been contacted for additional details about the school’s response and the students’ conditions.
