‘That’s my grandbaby’: Grandfather shares memories after Porter mother accused of killing her children

Porter – The grandfather of two of the children found shot inside a car in Angleton on Saturday is speaking out.

Georgia resident, James Chappell, said an 8-year-old boy, who is in the hospital, and a 3-year-old girl, who was killed, are his grandchildren.

Chappell identified the 3-year-old as Amourra Chappell.

“She had a beautiful smile, just like her dad,” said Chappell.

Chappell said his son, who is the father of the two children, is currently incarcerated.

He told KPRC 2 he was shocked to hear about the shooting.

“I started crying immediately. That’s my grandbaby,” said Chappell.

Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman held a press conference on Sunday afternoon, telling reporters that the suspect in the shooting that left a 13-year-old boy and 3-year-old Amourra dead, as well as an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl injured, is the children’s mother identified as 31-year-old Oninda Romelus.

According to Sheriff Stallman, Romelus called the sheriff’s office for help just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Deputies arrived to a Shell gas station on Highway 288 in Angleton where Romelus had pulled over in her white Audi sedan.

Sheriff Stallman said deputies found the four children who found shot inside the vehicle.

“We believe that the evidence shows that this tragedy has occurred inside of the vehicle,” said Stallman.

It is unclear the location of where the shots were fired.

Romelus is currently facing two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“I didn’t see anything wrong with her personality. She seemed like a beautiful person,” said Chappell about Romelus. “She had a wonderful job and everything."

Chappell said Romelus was a tax agent originally from Haiti. He said she lived in Georgia before moving to Texas about five months ago.

“This event has shaken our community and we are all feeling the loss,” said Sheriff Stallman.

Romelus is currently being held in Brazoria County jail on a $14 million bond.
