Liberty County residents plead for safer road after flooding strands them

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – When heavy rain falls in Mason Lake Estates, neighbors say they’re trapped. Their only road in and out — County Road 2167 — floods, cutting them off from emergency services, work, and basic supplies.

Last year, the road was completely submerged. Residents say they’ve seen water rise as high as seven feet.

“We all support each other in time of emergency,” said Brenda Hubbard, who’s lived in the neighborhood with her husband Bluford for nearly 20 years. “Everybody calls everybody to let them know the water’s coming up. All we’re asking for is for our road to be raised. Not dirt — it’s going to wash away. It needs to be something permanent.”

Other residents echoed that plea.

“We have one way in, one way out,” said Shirley Keenum, a resident of nearly 30 years. “I’ve had to be rescued with air boats with my 80-year-old mother-in-law.”

Neighbors say they’ve repeatedly contacted local officials but often get what they describe as “a runaround.”

“My main concern is if you can’t reach out to your county commissioner, then who do I reach out to?” asked Angie Morrow.

For 74-year-old Margie Whitley, who is disabled, the concern is urgent. “I want them to build up that road so that emergency people can come in and get the elderly out.”

County Response

Liberty County Commissioner Greg Arthur told KPRC 2 the county doesn’t have a way to raise the road — estimating it would cost millions. He said residents should report issues with their roads directly to their commissioner.
