GROVETON, Texas – Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace says a woman was flown by helicopter to a hospital after an explosion caused by her trying to light a cigarette while on oxygen.
It happened in Groveton at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Wallace said Trinity County Dispatch received a 911 call from the Senior Apartments.
The caller reported a woman, who was on oxygen, attempted to light a cigarette, which caused an explosion.
The woman was rushed to the Groveton ISD football field where a helicopter took her to a hospital.
“Smoking while using oxygen is extremely dangerous. Over the years, we have responded to several incidents involving people smoking while on oxygen, and unfortunately, these situations almost always end badly. If you have older parents, grandparents, or loved ones who are on oxygen, please do not allow them to light a cigarette or have any open flame near oxygen hoses or tanks. This simple precaution can save lives,” Sheriff Wallace said.
