HOUSTON – Two people were injured after a fire broke out late Sunday night at an apartment complex in Houston’s Third Ward.
The flames ignited a little after 11:15 p.m. in the 3700 block of Tuam Street, where Houston Fire Department (HFD) crews were called to reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a four-unit apartment building with heavy flames from the second floor and concerns that the fire was spreading to a nearby building.
HFD said they mounted an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control within 15 minutes, despite a brief delay caused by a broken hydrant at the scene.
Two people were treated for injuries on site and are being further evaluated, according to HFD. Their conditions have not been released.
Neighbors told investigators a man living in an upper unit may have set the fire intentionally. They said he fled after the flames broke out, but later returned to seek medical treatment. Officials say surveillance cameras captured the suspect at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by HFD’s Arson Bureau.
