LA MARQUE, Texas – The City of La Marque says an air quality assessment at the La Marque Police Department detected mold in an area between the building’s bathrooms, prompting a temporary closure of the police lobby and a relocation of staff.

“As a precautionary safety measure, we are temporarily reallocating staff to separate buildings, and the police department lobby is currently closed to the public until further notice,” Chief Randall Aragon said in a statement.

City officials said health and safety of staff and the community “are our highest priorities” as they work to address the issue. No reopening timeline was immediately available.

Last month, the La Marque Police Association president Richard Garcia said, “Our police department building is no longer meeting the needs of the officers and staff who serve this community every day. The current facility is outdated, overcrowded, and in some areas could even pose health risks to those working inside. This is not just a law enforcement issue—it’s a community issue.

Regardless of political or personal differences, we must come together to ensure our officers have a safe, functional, and modern facility to operate from. A few years ago, the estimated cost of a new police department was around $15 million. Since then, costs have only gone up, and the longer we wait, the more expensive this project becomes.

Investing in a new police department is investing in the safety and future of our community. The time to act is now—before costs rise further and conditions worsen."
