3 suspects identified after coach shot during youth baseball game in Katy

KATY, Texas – Three people have been identified, and charges are pending after a coach was shot in Katy during a baseball game. They are not in custody.

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting near the Ameripark youth baseball field located at 4256 F.M. 2855 on Sunday afternoon, and found a 27-year-old coach shot in the shoulder.

According to investigators, three people were shooting from a nearby pasture in the direction of the baseball field while a youth game was taking place.

“I had to legit bear crawl to my mom on my arms,” said 11-year-old Colton Bierman, who plays for the Texas Colts and was at the tournament with his mother, Kelly.

Coaches Alex Smith and Corbin Giesendorf of the Texas Colts helped players and families to safety after the shots rang out.

“It’s hard for me to talk about right now because of their faces. I’ll never forget looking at them,” Smith said.

Video obtained by KPRC 2 shows the frantic scene as adults guided children away from the fields.

“Once we started hearing that whistling, it was kind of confusing. ’Cause you’re like, there’s no way we’re at a baseball field right now,” Giesendorf said.

Coaches told KPRC 2 they had heard faint gunfire at the same complex the day before, but Sunday’s shots were much closer, close enough that a stray round struck the coach on a neighboring field.

The RAC released a statement saying in part: “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Parents at the tournament say the incident raises questions about where youth sports complexes are situated and whether fields are too close to areas where hunting or shooting occurs.

“We need to look at where people are shooting and people are hunting because it’s not safe for our kids,” Kelly Bierman said.

The Texas Colts organization said it will be more selective about where the team plays games and tournaments going forward.

Deputies say the three people accused of shooting have been identified and charges of deadly conduct and other offenses are pending.

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact 979-826-8282 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
